Perl wrapper for MAD

Peter Timofejew has created a Perl wrapper for MAD and LAME, and it is now part of CPAN: http://search.cpan.org/search?dist=Audio-MPEG This is a comprehensive wrapper providing nearly complete access to the libmad API, including high-resolution output samples. Questions about licensing issues...

Hi all, As the title suggests, I have a question regarding the GPLing of the MAD source code. I am currently working on an OpenDivX player for my iPAQ (to be able to watch movies on it) and am using MAD for the MP3 part (this is the only FP-free MP3 code I know about). The problem is not on my code (I planned to release it on a BSD-like license anyway, so there is no problem of it being GPLized) but rather on the OpenDivX library. Is the (in)famous 'viral' quality also working for other libraries that my players links to ? Could the 'opendivx' libraries be considered as 'system' libraries and not falling into the GPL ? Otherwise, I will need to add some sort of 'plug-in' infrastructure that would never be used except to load a MAD plug-in :-) Lionel -- Lionel Ulmer - http://www.bbrox.org/

mad123 (mpg321) and id3(v2) tags

I'm the author of mpg321, which is a fully free clone of mpg123. I noticed that in the mad source distribution there's a mostly empty mad123 .c file. I just wanted to make it publically known that I'm porting mpg321 to libmad, so it will pretty much act as mad123 once it's finished. Now, to fully emulate mpg123, I need to have support for id3 tags, which I note (sadly) isn't available in libmad. Is this out of the scope of the project, or difficult to implement? I'm not clear on just how id3 tags are encoded within an mp3 stream, but is it a possibility for the id3 tag support present in madplay to be moved to be more generally useful in the library? (I mean, it's not a *requirement*, as in the end I'll be using mad's implementation of it either way, but it'd probably be good for users of libmad to have id3 tag support within the library itself.) -- Joe Drew <hoserhead(a)woot.net> <drew(a)debian.org> Please encrypt email sent to me.

Patent and Copyright Issues?

Hello Robert Leslie and madplayer fans, Are there any known patent issues with using madplayer in a product? I am unclear on if there are algorithms which are generically off-limits, or what. I'm asking on the list since I assume the answer will be of general interest. I have only heard vague hearsay about MP3 and patents, I would love to have harder facts on the matter. And, for that matter, are there licensing issues for madplayer itself, were it to be used in a commercial application? Thanks -- David Van Brink \ dvb(a)altera.com P.S. We make microprocessors, and one of our customers is interested in using MP3 to play some recorded talking alerts in an embedded application. I've used madplayer in some demonstrations, and know that it would work great for their application.

mad output help

Hi, I have downloaded the mad 0.13.0b. I'm trying to use it to play mp3 on my ARM720T CPU. But I only have an 8-bits dsp sound decoder, so in the normal way, the mad product terrible sounds (I used --downsample and --mono). I have changed the default requested format to AFMT_U8 in audio_oss.c. After rebuilding the mad, I run the command "./madplay -v --downsample --mono --output=raw:/dev/dsp 03.mp3". But I still get terrible sounds. I also try the command "./madplay -v --downsample --mono --output=wav:03.wav 03.mp3". And then I use my PC to play the 03.wav. I found that the sound is good, while using the command "cat 03.wav > /dev/dsp" on ARM, I got bad sound. So I think that the format may not changed to AFMT_U8. Can anyone check the code for me? I only made three changes( I marked them 1,2,3). Antti, (I have copied the mad-dev list as I think Rob might be able to help out with the inline assembler syntax if it really is needed... :-) For fast decoding, the situation you are trying to achieve is that after every 32x32 hardware multiply instruction, only the upper 32bits of the answer are referenced in order to generate the mad_fixed_t result. (You will have to check the compiler output to be sure...) Please give this patch a try. WIn32 library

Hi everyone, I'd like to use MAD as a library (a DLL would be better) to read from MP3 buffers. The idea is to create a Windows codec (coding-decoding) with a complete free software solution. I'm currently working on having lame (as a DLL, since my project has the BSD license and not GPL) to do the encoding part, and I'd like to use MAD to do the decoding. Is that possible ? Any way of building a DLL without using cygwin (because I'm don't want to be obliged to use Cygwin on the user PC) ?

In Layer III, Huffman decoding may inadvertently read a few bytes beyond the end of the buffer in the case of certain invalid input. This is not detected until after the fact. To prevent this from causing problems, and also to ensure the next frame's main_data_begin pointer is always accessible, MAD requires MAD_BUFFER_GUARD (currently 8) bytes to be present in the buffer past the end of the current frame in order to decode the frame. Hi! I've yesterday downlaoded the mad source (latest beta).. mad-0.13.0b. ok.. my quest was (or is...) to compile mad to cris (made by Axis, 32 bit RISC, also know as etrax_lx) platform. Some tweaking with env. vars (CC=cris_gcc, etc)... made a little ./configure "wrapper": #! /bin/sh rm config.cache CC='gcc_cris -mlinux -DCRISMMU -muclibc=/home/antti/axis/devboard_lx/eroot' \ OBJCOPY=objcopy-cris \ LD=ld-cris \ AR=ar-cris \ RANLIB=ranlib-cris \ ./configure --host=unknown --target=cris --disable-nls --disable-aso --enabl e-fpm=approx I had to do something bad also with the main configure script to avoid a problem with the big-endian test (system couldn't run the cris code... compiling under intel x86 ... with cris_gcc cross compiler..) Ok.. with this setup (and some additional work before, cause cris uC-lib didn't have any native math suopport, which i had to add ... well... ) I managed to compile the whole thing without any ugly errors... After this I naturally tested the thing with the native cris platform.. Madplay could read the mp3:s very well, but the output (to a wav file) wasn't too good.. I coud hear that the music was there, but there was also some additional noice a lot. any pointers where i shuld start digging... (?) /Antti

Hi, I want to compile madplay for ARM720T CPU in Linux. But I find the output sound is terrible. I think the 8-bit PCM output may get better result in this CPU. Can anyone tell me how to get the 8-bit PCM output using madplay? Thanks.

I decided on trying BeOS again and was wondering if anyone had written an output module using the media server (or whatever). Everything compiles fine, but I don't see a way to actually generate sound without having madplay decode to a .wav and then playing that. It should be pretty simple to do and I was going to try it myself, but ended up confusing myself with the internals of mad while looking at the existing audio_* files. I hope someone's bored enough and has BeOS. :D -whee
