Writing to /dev/dsp

Hi! I am trying to decode a mp3 file using libmad's minimad in cygwin. Does anyone know if it is possible to write the decoded file to dev/dsp to get a real-time decoding? e.g.: ./minimad <test.mp3> /dev/dsp I have tried the command above, but all I get from my speakers is static. Do I have to set the sample size (16 bits), the number of channels (2) etc.? If so, how can I do this? Your answers will be appreciated, Haavard --

Hi, Sorry if I am asking the obvious. Is there a way to compile madplay into a shared library? I am looking for a way to embed madplay in an application and provide new controlls other than tty. The other option would be to do an exec() and controll it over stdin/stdout but that is not very elegant. Any suggestions? Aron

Hello, Thanks for your past responses everyone. Its helped a lot. So I was wondering if anyone has purchased the mad library for commerical use? If so I wouldnt mind speaking with you about the costs and how you used the library for whatever products. I've been waiting on a draft of licensing fees for a few weeks(7 or so), but I guess either they are on vacation, or I asked too many questions, because I haven't been able to get a response from anyone at Underbit. If you can't speak dollars and cents about your companies implementation, I understand as its probably confidential, but any response would be appreciated. Thanks again. -Matt

How to compile minimad with coverage in Cygwin?

Hi! I am trying to use the gcov function to generate a coverage text file of the minimad mp3 decoder. The problem is, Im running Cygwin and the only way to compile minimad.c is with the make minimad.exe command (gcc -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage minimad.c does not work in Cygwin as far as I can understand). Can anyone help me compile minimad.c with coverage in Cygwin??!! Regards, Håvard

Im trying to replace some of the malloc's used in madlib as to avoid the overhead of malloc, since I am using a SHARC DSP with limited memory and power. Anyway as per Andre's February 2002 post,he suggests using static array's to contain the data rather than a malloc, which makes sense. My problem is that Im not sure how to do that. Status of libid3tag

The patch from http://www.mars.org/mailman/public/mad-dev/2004-October/001112.html still hasn't been applied. Will it be anytime soon? I am thinking of overhauling the id3_file_* interface to support adding (and removing) tags from files as well as updating already existing ones (beyond the "primary" one). Is there any interest in this, i.e., will my patches actually be applied to this library if they are up to code? It's a very nice library with a nice interface, but it could still do with some improvements. Thanks, nikolai

How do I use gcov in Cygwin?

Hi! I am trying to use the gcov function to generate a coverage test of minimad. The "recipe" i found says that I am to do the following: (Start quote) Compile the source file: $ gcc -Wall -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage minimad.c This creates an instrumented executable. The executable must then be run to create the coverage data: $ ./a The data from the run is written to several files with the extensions '.bb' '.bbg' and '.da' respectively in the current directory. This data can be analyzed using the gcov command and the name of a source file: $ gcov cov.c (End quote) I can't even get past the first step because i can't compile minimad in any other way than make "minimad.exe"!! Does anyone know how to perform a successfull coverage test of minimad in Cygwin? And do I have to to flag the ./configure command? (e.g ./configure --enable-coverage) --

Minimad code size

Hello, We are currently trying to develop an arm-mp3 player. ( http://groups.google.com/group/qamp/, not very interesting really) Problem is, the code size generetad by arm-elf-gcc is about 300k, while all the different object files are about 100k. We already worked around the rq_table.dat using a Taylor approximation. The problem is we only have 128k flash available (we use a real embedded system, not some sort of arm with megs of memory and some weird linux kernel ;)) We started developing under windows (Dev-C++), trying to get to know mad. We were able to decode an mp3 file to pcm without much trouble. The windows executable however, is only 181k, and that includes rq_table.dat. We already tried using -o2 for gcc and strip, but that didn't get us very far. Neither do we include any unnecessary files (layer12.c, sys/*.h, etc). Any help would be appreciated as we pretty much have given up on this ourselves... Tiemen Schut

Confusing profiler results!

I have used the gprof function to run a profile on minimad after decoding a test mp3 file: ./minimad <test.mp3> test.pcm gprof -b minimad.exe > profile_results.txt The profiler results are attached at the end of this email. Get this error 'MAD_ERROR_BADHUFFDATA' while decoding higher Kbps files

Hello, I am here again with some issue while porting 'Madlib' to PalmOS. Actually currently I am able to play upto 64Kbps files from the device. But when the file bitrate goes about 96Kbps then while decoding the frames I continously get 'MAD_ERROR_BADHUFFDATA' error . If anyone can please help with this. Actually this only occurs when playing on device. While I play it on simulator,at that time it works fine since becoz its the destop PC. Thks in advance. Regards, Swapnil

Harald, You might wanna try Steinberg's Wavelab which allows you to import RAW PCM data (you have to supply to the software the number of bits, the way data is organized (signed, unsigned, ...)). I guess some open-source software could also do the trick (Audacity ?) Hi! I hope I am not driving you guys crazy with all my questions, but I really need your help. Even though I get several errors during execution of minimad with the "./minimad <test.mp3> test.pcm" command, a test.pcm file is generated in the directory. (The test.mp3 file is just a small ordinary mp3 file I have renamed test.mp3) The question is: I am interrested in hearing how the decoding turned out (if possible), but I can't play the .pcm file in any regular media player. How, if possible, do I do this? H. --

About the "lost synchronisation", "forbidden bitrate" value, I could be wrong but, from what I have found on my side, for avoid most (98%) of these errors; you have to feed the MAD decoder with 1 second chunk. This works fine, but when I try to run it with "./minimad <test.mp3> test.pcm" I get some errors: decoding error 0x0101 (lost synchronisation) at byte offset 0 decoding error 0x0103 (forbidden bitrate value) at byte offset 163 decoding error 0x0103 (forbidden bitrate value) at byte offset 213 . . . decoding error 0x0104 (reserved sample frequency value) at byte offset 224 decoding error 0x0103 (forbidden bitrate value) at byte offset 295 decoding error 0x0235 (bad main_data_begin pointer) at byte offset 412 Does anyone know what this means? Errors when running minimad

Hi! 1) I'm a little bit confused! I am trying to run libmad in Cygwin and while installing libmad I flagged the configure command: "./configure --disable-shared --enable-profiling", and then made the install. Does this make libmad a static ilbrary so that I don't have to use the flag "-static" while compiling minimad.c? (I was told to make the library static because gprof doesn't support dynamic libraries...) 2) After having some problems compiling minimad.c I read in another post in the mad-dev archives that I should use "make minimad.exe" to cimpile it. Problems compiling minimad.c

Hi! I am running Cygwin and have installed the libid3tag and libmad libraries. After installation I got the following message in the command window: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Libraries have been installed in: /usr/local/lib If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR´ flag during linking and do at least one of the following: -add LIBDIR to the `PATH´ environment variable during execution -add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH´ environment variable during linking -use the `-Wl,--rpath -Wl,LIBDIR´ linker flag ----------------------------------------------------------------- When I try to compile the minimad.c file in libmad with: gcc -static -pg -minimad.c -o minimad -lmad (I'm using -static to be able to do a profiling later on ) I get an error message that says that: .../i686-pc-cygwin/bin/ld: cannot find -lmad When I am triyng to use just: gcc -static -pg minimad.c -o minimad I get several errors telling me that there are "undefined references to `name_of_function´". I'm guessing both of these problems have something to do with me not linking against installed libraries? As you probably already have figured out, I'm kind of a newbie to all of this and I would really appreciate your help. Tanks. H. --
