hfs_fs 0.7 is released!

I am pleased to announce that version 0.7 of hfs_fs is now available for immediate download from the HFS for Linux Page at <http://www-sccm.Stanford.EDU/~hargrove/HFS/>. It is also available (or soon will be) from Sunsite (and its many mirrors) in <ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/ALPHA/hfs/>. hfs_fs 0.7 is a kernel loadable module implementing the Macintosh HFS filesystem for Linux kernel versions 2.0.1 and newer. Note that it is for local media only; it is not a AppleShare client. For those of you running AppleShare servers on your Linux machine (Netatalk or CAP), this software is a perfect way to mount Macintosh CDROMs on your Linux machine for export to your Macs. hfs_fs is not yet fully writable but is nearly so. If you consider only the data fork of files, then hfs_fs is now as capable as the MSDOS or VFAT filesystems: You CAN: + Create, delete and rename directories and data forks of files with the caveat that names are case insensitive (so foo and Foo are the same file or directory). + Run Linux executables or shared libraries on an HFS disk if they are stored in the data fork of a file. + Read both forks of files and the Finder's metadata of files and directories. + Write, truncate and mmap data forks of files (and the resource fork if the filesystem is mounted with the fork=cap option). + Toggle the 'w' permission bits (as a group) of data forks. + Change the m_time of files and directories. You CANNOT (yet): - Write or truncate resource forks of files unless the filesystem is mounted with the fork=cap option. - Write or truncate the Finder's metadata. Version pre-0.7-9 of my HFS module for Linux is now available from http://www-sccm.stanford.edu/~hargrove/HFS/ This is just the pre-0.7-7 plus the fix that was posted with the pre-0.7-7 announcement and some documentation improvements. There have been no new bugs reported and I have done some pretty brutal testing (I managed to make my hardrive over heat!). If things go well then the official 0.7 release should come by week's end. ---- Paul H. hfs_fs_pre-0.7-7 now available

Version pre-0.7-7 of my HFS module is now available on my HFS for Linux web page: http://www-sccm.stanford.edu/~hargrove/HFS/ This release fixes 3 real show-stopper bugs in pre-0.7-5 that could have locked up the system under heavy writing loads. There remains one reported bug, and that is that the sizes of the resource fork under AppleDouble and Netatalk are stored in the wrong byte-order, so Netatalk clients see small files as being absolutely huge. Pre0.7-5 release of HFS module for Linux

I hope to have an official 0.7 release of my HFS module by the end of the month. However, in order to do that I need people to help test it out. There is now a pre0.7-5 version available from the HFS for Linux web page: <http://www-sccm.stanford.edu/~hargrove/HFS>. This release requires Linux kernel version 2.0.1 or newer. This is the 13Aug96 snapshot fixed for the rename() interface in the newer kernels plus metadata for the root directory under CAP and AppleDouble, (untested) support for old Mac Plus partition tables and some minor internal changes. List of key features present in 0.7 that were missing in 0.6: Fully writable directories and data forks. Fully writable resource forks with "fork=cap" mount option. Supports both old- and new-style Mac partition tables. Key features that will still be missing in 0.7: Fully writable resource forks and Finder metadata. Support for devices not allowing 512-byte blocks. AppleSingle support. Portability to the DEC Alpha. (due to unaligned accesses) Please test this release out if you can and let me know how it works for you. I want to hear both positive and negative reports, since the positive ones let me know the software is getting tested. Once again, the more positive reports I get from testers the sooner I will make an official 0.7 release available. ---- Paul H. hfs_fs snapshot 13Aug96 bug

Well, I made the mistake of assuming that since it worked with my 2.0.0 kernel that it would work with all 2.0.x kernels; after all there should only be bug fixes in the 2.0.x series, right? Unfortunately the 2.0.1 patch included a POSIX.1 compliance patch that made a change to the VFS interface. The result is that the 13Aug96 snapshot will work with kernels 1.3.67-2.0.0 but won't compile with 2.0.1 or greater. I know exactly how to fix the problem but won't have a chance to package up another snapshot for a day or two. Until I can get a newer snapshot together, I'd appreciate reports (both positive and negative) of any testing any of you might do with the older kernels, but don't go out of your way to downgrade since a fixed version is only a day or two away. Unfortunately, this means that when released 0.7 will be for 2.0.1 and newer only. (At least it cuts my testing down to a dozen kernels rather than a random sampling of the 61 kernels from 1.3.67 to 2.0.12). ---- Paul H. There is a new (13Aug96) snapshot on my web page: <http://www-sccm.stanford.edu/~hargrove/HFS/> Changes from the 05Aug96 snapshot: Fixed serious bug that would hang the machine on fragmented files. New linuxdoc-sgml based README file (w/ text and dvi included). Have finally separated the Linux-specific code from the portable core. Please let me know how it works for you. hfsutils-1.17b released

I have made a new release of hfsutils, version 1.17b. Besides a few bug fixes and code/documentation cleanups, this version also includes a working `hattrib' command-line program to change the attributes of HFS files (type/creator codes, plus the invisible/locked flags.) See the included hattrib(1) man page for details. For completeness, the previously posted Perl script to display the partitions on a raw Apple-partitioned disk is also included in the distribution in the file "hdisk.pl". (It is not formally a part of the distribution yet, so it won't be installed by `make install'.) New snapshot of HFS module for Linux

The latest development snapshot of my HFS filesystem module for Linux is now available as http://www-sccm.stanford.edu/~hargrove/HFS/hfs_fs_snapshot-05Aug96.tar.gz It has been over 3 months since my last snapshot release and I've made quite a few changes to the internal workings so I'd appreciate it if those people who have tested out previous snapshots give this one a good workout. Many small nit-picky bugs and a couple serious (but never reported) ones have been fixed. The only significant change in functionallity since the 27Apr96 snapshot is that rename() is done, so 'mv' will now work on an HFS disk. If one ignores the Finder meta-data and the resource fork, the HFS filesystem is now as functional as the MSDOS or VFAT filesystems. Please try it out and send me reports, both positive and negative. I made two stupid factual errors in the email that started this thread with respect to the naming conventions used by linux and mklinux, but all the same if fdisk knows how to name partitions, and hfsutils (or whatever) wants to have similar functionality to fdisk, I presume that it should have *some* knowledge of partitions (not necessarily of devices). Then again, for many systems that run the hfstools, using native partition numbering is meaningless on a HFS disk since the O/S can't use the disk's partition table. Assuming that we *want* to do this, there are ways around the problem. linux (and mklinux) generally calls a raw devices something like /dev/sdb (my previous email was incorrect wrt. this), and this raw device has major device number 8 and minor device number 16. If you were to run 'hdisk /dev/sdb' then hdisk could do one of two things: 1) assume that the partition numbers can be found by adding a digit to the end of the name, "because it's linux". 2) assume that successive partition numbers can be found by looking for a device special file with the same major number and an incremented minor device number, and go look up the appropriate name. This second approach would solve the naming problem but a problem still remains if different operating systems "hide" HFS partitions (I believe that MacBSD transparently ignores non-unix partitions because of a hard limit to the number of partitions, correct me if I'm wrong). All in all I think I'm just confusing things, because hfstools are very useful as they are :) Maybe just a simple mechanism for displaying hfs partitions in an hfstools specific manner and hmounting a specific partition (rather than always the first partition) in an hfstools specific manner would be more appropriate.
