Problem of Allocation Block Size

Hi, When I create a volume of bigger size for eg. 640 MB Now since allocation units is fixed at 65536. Therefore Bytes per allocation unit becomes 640 * 2 ^20 / 65536 = 10 * 2^10 (10K) (approx) That means if i give even one allocation block for each file i am physically giving him 10k space even though file may be some 100 bytes which results in space wastage. I also believe there is no solution because each file should have atleast one allocation block and each file should start from a new allocation block . I am just wondering if I am right??? Hidden files

How does one get to see hidden files/ change the attributes on Mac OS 9 ? Someone had written that this is possible using Apple's ResEdit but I thought that was just for editing icons and the like. Can one get to see hidden system-files at all ? What else is ResEdit used for normally - is this relevant to external HFS-readonly volumes ? Would be grateful for any tips/suggestions. MacOS9.2 and MAC OS X

Hi Everybody, I have enquired a very queer problem. What I did... 1. Created a Volume File and inserted some Text documents in that volume. 2. I then wrote that Volume Image file on to a CD using a mastering application which just dumps the image on to the disc. 3. Took the CD and mounted it in Mac OS 9.2 The files were displayed but when I clicked it for opening it I got a Error Mssg saying "Simple Text" cannot open this Kind of File. 4. Next I mounted it in Mac OS X the new OS from Mac. Amazing enough It showed all the files and the data correctly. Inference: The data is written correctly on to the Cd and it is being recognized by Mac (MAC OS X). Both the OS show the files properly and recognize it as HFS formatted volume. Point to note.. Since the text files were copied from a Windows volume in Binary mode no CRLF conversions were done. But in Mac OS X it didnot show any wrong display and everything was fine. Thirdly when I wrote other types of files in the volume eg. *.htm, *.pdf They were shown in both the Mac OS's(9.2 and X) but again the Text files couldnot be opened only in Mac OS 9.2 Fourthly, when I mount the Volume File created by my application using a freeware"HFVExplorer" I can view all the files and data (i.e. Text files are getting opened and displayed). From all the above experiments I think my code is not the Culprit!! And only "Text Files" are not getting opened. Then where is the BUG?? Any ideas! have a nice weekend. Now Rect defines the size and location of a QuickDraw rectangle. struct Rect { short top; short left; short bottom; short right; }; top The vertical coordinate of the upper-left point of the rectangle. left The horizontal coordinate of the upper-left point of the rectangle. bottom The vertical coordinate of the lower-right point of the rectangle. right The horizontal coordinate of the lower-right point of the rectangle. I set top to 5, left to 5 bottom to 200 and right to 200...... but the default rectangle (a smaller sized one) still continues to appear. What am I doing wrong out here ?.. sth wrong with the values ? The rest of my finder flags are all set to 0 so the finder uses its default values. I'm only setting the creator and filetype of the files in addition to this. Any tips would help a lot ! Are you sure you've set drAtrb to 0 first before OR-ing 0x8000 with it ? To make a Readonly HFS Volume

Hi , I want to make a HFS volume readonly. I am setting the flag in mdb.drAtrb to mdb.drAtrb | = 0x4000 ( As said in Inside Macintosh) Bit Meaning 15 Set if th volume is Locked by Software. After creating a Image of such a Volume. I am mounting it with a FreeWare application in Windows which can mount HFS volumes. But , I can still add files to that volume through this software and delete them too. That shows the volume is not Locked. So, anything else I should do to Volume parameters to make that Volume represent a ReadOnly one?? Waiting for ur Inputs. Hi all, I am just wondering about the Max Volume size for a HFS volume. HFS Maximum Image Size

Hello Listers, The maximum size of an HFS-volume seems to be 65535*65535 = 3.99 GB. (since the respective fields in the MDB are UInt16's). Does this mean that to store a file of size 4.7GB I would have to necessarily go in for HFS+ or is this possible with HFS somehow ? Regards, Nandini Hengen
