Working with classic Japanese (Mac OS) encoded filenames?

Hi, I work with a lot of old Japanese HFS Standard CD-ROMs (as ISO format). I use hfsutils (hls -1aR > file.txt) to catalogue their contents. I've come to notice that some discs produce a directory listing that is valid Japanese (Mac OS) encoding (aka x-mac-japanese), whilst others do not and result in an unidentifiable encoding and I can't figure out why. Maybe it's a bug in hfsutils? Mounting HFS on Linux

Hello everyone, I just found this list when researching online and I really hope that someone out there is still listening to this list :). I am currently trying to migrate my moms data from an old Mac Performa to some new system. My aim is not even to get rid of the system but at least to have a functional copy of the data somewhere. Unfortunately I experience a problem when mounting the disk in my linux, saying: " Sory, can't mount volume: error reading from medium (Input/output error)" I get the same error when using hmount. That's why I started to ask a question here: https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/17608/how-to-mount-macin… . I would love to draw your attention on my problem and on my question and hope that someone out there can help me saving another Macintosh. Using Mac LC III from floppy

I acquired Mac LC III with faulty SCSI HD. As I cannot find a replacement for now, and my Mac has 36MB of RAM, I tried to make a System floppy with RamDisk+, so that I could boot from RAM, and use floppy for loading other programs. On the net I found ramdisk324a.sit.bin. I have Ubuntu 11.10 on my PC machine, and a working floppy disc. I deleted some network support files from Network Install 7.5 and tried to copy ramdisk324a.sit.bin to floppy disc, but I got the error: hcopy: "./ramdisk324a.sit.bin": unknown, unsupported, or corrupt MacBinary file (Invalid argument) After that, I tried -r option, and the file was copied, but I was unable to run it on Mac, as it wasnt executable or something (Mac displayed that there is no program to open this file). I tried same thing with SuperBoot7.5 image, but with same results. This is the first time that I'm using anything Macintosh-related and I guess that I didn't do something obvious. How can I make a file executable in Mac environment? I have read about data and resource parts of a file on HFS, but I found only sea.bin file for RamDisk. Could someone point me in right direction? Identification of deleted files in HFS plus

Hi All, I am writing an application on Mac to list out the files deleted from the system (even from the trash). I have written code to read the catalog file node by node. But I have no idea of how deleted files are represented and how can I access them. Any guesses? Any input on this would be of great help. Thanks in advance. Best Regards Rashmi

Sector size in the Driver Descriptor

Hello, Till now, all disk descriptors (in sector 0) I had seen for magnetical disks and CD-ROMs began with 45 52 02 00, that is the physical sector size was always 0x0200 (512d) even on CD-ROMs. On the other hand, I had seen 0x0400 on magneto-optical disks. Yesterday, I cam across a CD-ROM burnt on a Mac Mini with the integrated burning tool and, to my surprise, I got 08 00 in positions 2 and 3 above. Any comments? -- Pierre Duhem duhem(a)macdisk.com

Error message: "Keys out of order"

Hi, Sorry for the delay. I made an image using Disk Copy under OS 9. The image seems to contain a desktop database by default. Is there any means of creating images without a DTDB using DiskCopy so that I can compare ? Thanks! Mounting G4 Hard Disk

Free Space galore

Hi, It's been a while since there's been any traffic on this list so I guess I have the honour of posting the first mail of 2005. My question is not an HFSx one per se, however, it's it in the ballpark: Since OS X.3 came along, the partition map is now being populated by default with a number of Apple_Free partition entries interspersing the user's specified partitions. I'm curious whether anyone knows the rationale behind this. I have my theories but I'm probing for a more definitive response, if one exists. Also, if a better venue exists for general Mac-formatted device questions exists, perhaps someone from the list can share that information. Thanks, Gord Beatty

Question about hcopy

Hello, I have HFS drive that I want to copy a file to from NetBsd. (netbsd-macppc port) I am running hfsutils on NetBsd 1.6.2 I hmount the drive #hmount /dev/wd0d It gives the drive info etc.. Now when I do th following #hcopy netbsd_file mac_file It says "myfile" No such File or Directory although netbsd_file is there.
