Thank you all for the help you offered regarding my problem (useful and otherwise). It was nice to learn so much about HFS without having yet purchased any of the _Inside Macintosh_ books.
It seems like writing the fsck would be a fun project, but alas, I keep my nose firmly attached to the dissertation grindstone. As much as I would like to mess around with this device and with HFS, I am going to take the sensible route and search through the incrementals for this missing files.
