Having had virtually no traffic on this list for ages, over the past few weeks or so, there seems to have been a rush of interest in HFS/HFS+ ...
I'm just curious to as why ...
I must admit that I haven't really kept up to date with more 'recent' Apple developments (HFS+, MacOS X, etc), but I had assumed that as MacOS X doesn't actually need the 'extras' HFS+ supplies, then HFS+ would eventually disappear.
May be my assumption is a bit naive, but especially for writing CDs for Macs on non-Mac platforms, creating a Rock Ridge/Joliet CD is much easier than an HFS or HFS hybrid CD ...

P.S. does anyone else that posts to this list get a reply from "abuse@microsoft.com" ...
I'm a student working part-time on a filesystems project and was just given an outline of the project requirements to start off. I enrolled myself as part of the student-dev and darwin-development mailing lists but the topics discussed there are not really relevant to my requirements... besides I end up getting more than a 100 mails from these which I can't really use purposefully.
I'm glad that people have slowly started responding on this list and that a healthy discussion of issues seems to have begun.... as compared to the other apple mailing-lists I had begun to assume that this list was pretty much in hibernation :)

I'm not too sure but do older Macs support Roc Ridge/Joliet too? I'm sure there aren't too many people using older Macs but maybe this has to to do with making things easier for them (?)

Aargh!...don't tell me they're mailing you too!....I don't intend to contact Microsoft (by no means!) but their mails always begin with a 'Thank you for contacting Microsoft...." ...maybe they don't know they're part of this list ? Besides if they're offering constructive suggestions we should be hearing from 'support' not 'abuse' I think. I wrote to them about this once and it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Yep, I seem to get replies from Microsoft, but I had one reply that seemed useful. I guess someone has cleverly subscribed them to the list. My interest in HFS (and infact Macs) has come about after having to support an office full of them, and wherase over the last 5 years, I've become to love Linux, and find it quite capable of supporting networks of Windows PC's, there doesn't seem the same level of support of Macs. Since Apple has made the step towards POSIX, I think that should change. I can happily take a Windows PC's HardDisk, stick it in my Linux box and fix pretty much anything with tools I can find, wheras for Macs, I can't even read anything after OS 8. Also I work on Netatalk, so I looked into some of the well documented Mac specs, and believe core to implementing a nice fluffy AFP server, you need a CatalogFile. Hence the HFS connection. Simon
I'm the Microsoft guy.
I joined this list before I started at MSFT, while I was in college. I was working on some Linux stuff and I was going to try to write a Windows app to read Mac disks. Then work took over, and I never got it done, but I'm still interested.
I work on Xbox, so the stuff I see here won't really help me, but it's still interesting.
