Hello, Thanks for replying.
What exactly are you hoping to accomplish by reading the Desktop DB
file?
I doubt Apple wants someone writing code that messes with that file anyway. Besides Desktop DB is part of Mac OS 9 code. Mac OS X uses .rc files per directory that I believe you can open with "Property List Editor."
If you want to save the state of a directory in Mac OS 9, all meta data
is
stored when using .SIT and .HQX compression. Using Toast to burn a CD also saves that meta data.
I'm trying to create an external HFS image from another platform - i.e. I want to write the desktop DB file into my image which is then written onto an external volume which I want to be readable under Mac OS 9 and earlier. I've gathered that this is not absolutely necessary to ensure readability but that it would improve user-experience for Mac users to an extent ( when files present on my external volume were created using applications not installed on the Mac for instance ). I'm not considering recording a CD under Mac OS or saving the state of any directories already present on the Mac. And I'm not considering Mac OS X at all.
