Enclosed is a patch that adds MP3 decoding support to SoX, based on the external libmad library for decoding. It is based on madlld, a decoder-tutorial written by Bertrand Petit (http://www.bsd-dk.dk/~elrond/audio/madlld/).
After applying the patch, it is necessary to run autoconf in order to rebuild the configure script.

P.S. Does anybody have any info about MP3-encoded WAV files (format tag 0x55)?

You can have a look at the Lame source code, it supports decoding to a WAV file and reading to a WAV file. Otherwise try to find info on the RIFF file format.
