malloc to static array

Hello Everyone, Thanks for taking the time to read this. Im trying to replace some of the malloc's used in madlib as to avoid the overhead of malloc, since I am using a SHARC DSP with limited memory and power. Anyway as per Andre's February 2002 post,he suggests using static array's to contain the data rather than a malloc, which makes sense. My problem is that Im not sure how to do that. It sound simple but not being an overly experienced programmer, Im not sure what data type the array should be to house the data within a struct. Sorry I've tried a number of things but just am not sure how to do this. The orignal code in decoder.c, mad_decoder_run function is: decoder->sync = malloc(sizeof(*decoder->sync)); using an unsigned char array such as: unsigned char syncDat[2000]; //sizeof originally yields ~1650 bytes, so 2000 should be suffice and replacing the line of code with: decoder->sync = syncDat[0]; Produces the following error ".\decoder.c", line 558: cc0513: {D} warning: a value of type "unsigned char" cannot be assigned to an entity of type "struct <unnamed> *" decoder->sync = syncDat[0]; ^ Its obvious Im not completely sure what Im doing here. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Matt

MADPLAY on embedded processor (DSP)

Status of libid3tag

The patch from http://www.mars.org/mailman/public/mad-dev/2004-October/001112.html still hasn't been applied. Will it be anytime soon? I am thinking of overhauling the id3_file_* interface to support adding (and removing) tags from files as well as updating already existing ones (beyond the "primary" one). Is there any interest in this, i.e., will my patches actually be applied to this library if they are up to code? It's a very nice library with a nice interface, but it could still do with some improvements. Thanks, nikolai

Hi! Thanks for the advice Joe, but since I only can compile minimad with the "make minimad.exe" command, I don't think I'm compiling it with coverage! I guess this makes my problem: How to compile minimad.c with coverage in Cygwin? Regards, Håvard --

How do I use gcov in Cygwin?

Hi! I am trying to use the gcov function to generate a coverage test of minimad. The "recipe" i found says that I am to do the following: (Start quote) Compile the source file: $ gcc -Wall -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage minimad.c This creates an instrumented executable. The executable must then be run to create the coverage data: $ ./a The data from the run is written to several files with the extensions '.bb' '.bbg' and '.da' respectively in the current directory. This data can be analyzed using the gcov command and the name of a source file: $ gcov cov.c (End quote) I can't even get past the first step because i can't compile minimad in any other way than make "minimad.exe"!! Does anyone know how to perform a successfull coverage test of minimad in Cygwin? And do I have to to flag the ./configure command? (e.g ./configure --enable-coverage) --

Minimad code size

Hello, We are currently trying to develop an arm-mp3 player. ( http://groups.google.com/group/qamp/, not very interesting really) Problem is, the code size generetad by arm-elf-gcc is about 300k, while all the different object files are about 100k. We already worked around the rq_table.dat using a Taylor approximation. The problem is we only have 128k flash available (we use a real embedded system, not some sort of arm with megs of memory and some weird linux kernel ;)) We started developing under windows (Dev-C++), trying to get to know mad. We were able to decode an mp3 file to pcm without much trouble. The windows executable however, is only 181k, and that includes rq_table.dat. We already tried using -o2 for gcc and strip, but that didn't get us very far. Neither do we include any unnecessary files (layer12.c, sys/*.h, etc). Any help would be appreciated as we pretty much have given up on this ourselves... Tiemen Schut

Confusing profiler results!

Hi! I have used the gprof function to run a profile on minimad after decoding a test mp3 file: ./minimad <test.mp3> test.pcm gprof -b minimad.exe > profile_results.txt The profiler results are attached at the end of this email. I have compared the results to other profiler results in the mad-dev archives and have found that my results differ from the others in that the "output" function in minimad.c are at the top of the list when it comes to "% time" and "cumulative seconds". Is it suppposed to be this way? (I am running cygwin and using libmad-0.15.1b) H. Get this error 'MAD_ERROR_BADHUFFDATA' while decoding higher Kbps files

Hello, I am here again with some issue while porting 'Madlib' to PalmOS. Actually currently I am able to play upto 64Kbps files from the device. But when the file bitrate goes about 96Kbps then while decoding the frames I continously get 'MAD_ERROR_BADHUFFDATA' error . If anyone can please help with this. Actually this only occurs when playing on device. While I play it on simulator,at that time it works fine since becoz its the destop PC. Thks in advance. Regards, Swapnil
