Problems with ARM using GCC 3.2 (and 3.2.1)

I'm having some problems with libmad running on ARM using GCC-3.2. I verified that I have the same problems with GCC-3.2.1, but I'm using GCC-3.2 for most of this. My GCC is built for armv4 architecture, I'm running on a Cirrus ARM7 part. I've worked through the issues enough to sort out my problems, but I would like to get to the bottom of the problem if anyone has insights. Built as released in 0.14.2b with gcc-3.2 (or gcc-3.2.1), the decoder produces odd sounding artifacts in typical layer-3 MP3 files. It sounds to me like some sort of aliases of high frequencies and lower frequencies sound fine, but I'm no expert in this sort of thing. Let's just say it sounds weird. If I change the optimization of layer3.c from the default "-O" to "-O2" the decoder behaves correctly and nicely decodes MP3s. To make things a little more complicated, if synth.c is changed from "-O" to "-O2", the text segment of synth.o gets quite a bit larger and the performance of the decoder degrades to the point where a 128kbps 44.1k layer3 MP3 no longer decode in real-time on a 74MHz ARM7tdmi. Bleh. With "-O2" the dct32() routine in synth.c blows up into a lot more code that I have a difficult time understanding. It seems to put a large number of loads and stores at the beginning and end of the routine that doesn't make sense to me. Anyway, for things to work properly it seems that layer3.c needs to be "-O2" and synth.c needs to be "-O". Okay, I've now done a little more refinement on this problem and it seems that the problems with both synth.c and layer3.c are related to the optimization option "-fschedule-insns". layer3.c must have the option -fschedule-insns (which is included by default with -O2), and synth.c must not have -fschedule-insns. So, my workaround is to change the default optimization in libmab to "-O2" and twiddle the makefile to add the option "-fno-schedule-insns" to synth.c. If anyone has any similar experiences or ideas, please let me know. jeff

Mad winamp plugin bug

Sorry to post twice in a row, but I've now got a more specific question. I've been looking at the mad winamp plugin source code, and I've worked out what causes the bug. When winamp tells the plugin to seek it basically calculates a file position to seek to by doing:- (seekpos / song length) * (filelength). This works with CBR files but not with VBR files as they have different data rates throughout the files. I assume that the mad library seeks correctly and I would like to be able to use it to do the seeking with the winamp plugin (as my alternative would be to cludge it by reading frames from the beginning of the file until I got to the right time). Any pointers on what functions I could use in the library?

Mad winamp plugin bug

The mad plugin for winamp stops reporting the correct time after seeking in a VBR file. The time reported is normally about a couple of seconds too low (that is if you have lyrics playing along to the music, the lyrics are shown before they are played). Has anybody got any idea what might be causing this problem or know of a quick and dirty fix I can do to the mad winamp plugin source to fix it? The problem only occurs after a certain amount in to the file (and if you seek before this point, it's still in sync, seeking afterwards though it starts reporting wrong times again). It occurs regardless of the setting of fast playing time in the plugin configuration, regardless of whether xing or lame was used to encode the file and regardless of if the file contains a VBR header. If anybody wants to try and fix this, I can send them a sample lyrics file and a sample mp3 to test it against.

I need MAD to decode in chunks, with an arbitrary amount of time between the decoding of each chunk (e.g. I decode the first 50000 samples and then a second later I decode the next 50000 samples), and I'm running into the problem of MAD losing syncronization as I begin to decode each chunk, resulting in the loss of several frames each time. Can anybody help me?

The problem that I've been having doesn't have to do with configuration. Here's the issue: in my codebase, the project's properties show warnings as errors. Because of this, I was forced to make several minor modifications to MAD, such as castings to resolve the possible loss of data and signed/unsigned mismatches (see list below). I just returned to a fresh version of MAD and recompiled without the "Warnings as errors" checkbox being set, and it's now running fine. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to be able to convince my teammates to turn that checkbox off for the rest of the codebase. Has anybody else tried compiling libmad using strict compiler settings? Following is the list of warnings that results if you attempt to compile libmad using strict settings. Configuration problem?

I've discovered madlld and begun using it to try and learn libmad's low-level api, but I'm having some problems. When I run madlld, most of the frames fail with recoverable errors, and the total output is very small. For example, an mp3 that is 4937K in size is resulting in a decoded version that is only 221K, with only 49 frames decoded. Almost all of the other frames fail with the recoverable error of "Huffman data overrun." I'm guessing that my MAD configuration is to blame, but I'm new to using MAD and I'm not sure where it has gone wrong (I've looked in configure.in and at my config.log but I'm not seeing the issue). I'm running in MSVC 6 on a Windows 2000 machine, so I've set the following preprocessor definitions: FPM_DEFAULT,HAVE_CONFIG_H,ASO_ZEROCHECK,WIN32,_DEBUG,_WINDOWS,_MBCS. Also, I'm using the config.h and mad.h from the msvc++/libmad directory. Has anybody else had this problem? Does anybody have a config.h and mad.h that work well on Win32 that I could share? I'm working on integrating libmad with a game engine, and I've got a few questions. I'm new to MAD and mp3 decoding in general, so I apologize in advance for any newbie questions. In scanning through the mad-dev archives, I read that FPM_DEFAULT produces slow and not very accurate decoding whereas FPM_INTEL is fast and accurate, but the provided msvc project file uses FPM_DEFAULT. Is this because FPM_INTEL assumes gcc and uses gcc-specific extensions? Is there any way to use something faster than FPM_DEFAULT in VC? I'm very concerned with speed because I'll need to use lazy decoding to ensure smooth frame rates. I initially used mpglib (a subsection of mpg123) for this project of mine, and got the lazy decoding working nicely when I discovered that mpglib doesn't support joint stereo. Does libmad fully support joint stereo, intensive stereo, and VBR? Thanks very much, Chris Dellario

how to quickly find out ID3 tag

I want to quickly scan an Mp3 file and get its song name, artist etc info before playing. For ID3tag V1, I can search from the file beginning and end. Clear input buffer with high-level API?

Hi, Rob (and all). I'm trying to figure out how to tell the decoding process to flush the input buffer after a MAD_FLOW_STOP is returned from decode_input_read (in madplay.c). It stops playing fine, but when I decode() again, it picks up from where it left off in the buffer. I want to retain this behavior too, but also have the ability to kill the current buffer when it restarts. Is this not possible with the high-level API? Perhaps I can add a MAD_FLOW_FLUSH? Statically linking madplay

Hi, I have been trying to statically link madplay but with no success. I set LDFLAGS to --static in the Makefile but when I run the file command, it informs me that there are still shared library dependencies. Can someone advise how to modify the Makefile so madplay would be a monolithic, statically linked app? I have run out of ideas. Thanks. UQ

Hi All, I am trying to implement a audio decoder on DSP using assembly language. I want to decode ID3v1 & ID3v2.2 and parse ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4. Regarding parsing out ID3v2.3 I am facing out one problem. Standards of ID3v2.4 says that I can be present in the middle of the file.What it means that some audio data can be there and then ID3 tag and then audio data. Information about this ID3v2.4 tag will be given by the SEEK frame in minimum offset from the end of the tag. The problem is that it is not clear or nowhere said that First ID3v2.4 will be present in beginning or audio data. Suppose that only IDv2.4 tag is present in a mp3 file and no other v1 or v2.2 or v2.3 are present. In case second ID3v2.4 tag is also present then SEEK frame in first tag will tell the location of the second tag. My question is is it possible that no tag is present in the very beginning and file is starting with mp3 audio data and then ID3v2.4 tag and then again audio data. search_tags behavior in libid3tag

Hi, I've been trying to get xmms-mad to stop crashing on various sometimes odd audio streams. Recently I was trying to get it to read a group of MP3 files I picked up somewhere some time ago and traced the cause of their crash to the fact that if a stream doesn't have ID3 tags, bad things happen. But libid3file was refusing to load tags for streams that I knew had them. Turns out that my files have nice, valid ID3v1 info at the beginning of the stream and something that libid3file rejects at the end. (I don't know why yet.) In this case, libid3file refuses to return *any* ID3 info, even the valid stuff that it loaded from the beginning. Why is this being done? I got it to return tag info with the following. Hi, everyone Is there anybody with the experience to do the compliance test using ver 0.14.2b code ?! I use madplay to decode the compliance bitstream : he_mode.bit My output file is he_mode_intel_24.hex The output file generated by L3dec.exe is he_mode.hex. The compliance test result : 251137 samples are compared. and the maximum difference :0.489849 the root mean square is 0.0619873 You can find the 11701th sample: the he_mode_intel_24.hex is 123809 the he_mode.hex is f1e918 It has exceeded the maximum difference accoring to the compliance test. Also in 11702th .... The result can't meet the full compliance request. Also I doubt why the file size of output hex file is different with the hex file generated by l3dec.exe the following is libmad build environment My configuration is FPM_INTEL,_LIB,HAVE_CONFIG_H,ASO_ZERO_CHECK,WIN32, _MBCS_DEBUG The decode command : -d -b 24 -o he_mode_intel.hex he_mode.bit Can anyone give me the hints where I might go wrong?! Help! Frames not being rendered.

I have a file that was tagged with an id3v2.2 tag. When I go to write out the tag, most of the frames are not being written out. When the tag is parsed, it hits this snippet in id3_frame_parse several times: if (ID3_TAG_VERSION_MAJOR(version) == 2) { xid[0] = 'Y'; xid[1] = id[0]; xid[2] = id[1]; xid[3] = id[2]; id = xid; flags |= ID3_FRAME_FLAG_TAGALTERPRESERVATION | ID3_FRAME_FLAG_FILEALTERPRESERVATION; } ...and the flag bits that are being set, as far as I can tell, function solely to prevent the frame from being rendered. I'm guessing that because these are older frame types (TT2, TP1, etc.) that they are being parsed and flagged so that the lib can create a frame with a newer tag type? and write it out instead? But it looks like most of my frames have these flags set. Sometimes the frames DO get written out and but I haven't figured out under what conditions yet. Is there a function lying around that prints the contents of the frames as they exist in memory? It would be helpful to me to see a before and after snapshot of my frames.
