I have ported MAD to a couple of MIPS platforms. It really helps if your CPU has a 32-bit multiply/accumulate instruction, otherwise you will not be able to get the desired performance or audio quality. 56MHz may be on the slow side to get real-time performance from MAD, but much depends on the availability of mul/add and the quality of code generated by your compiler.
