I've got a Live! MP3+ on a Via board, and haven't had any problems. Well, not with audio, anyway. I don't know the model number off the top of my head, but it's the dual 370 that CompUSA was selling for $100.
What kind of problems should I be looking for?
The big problem is with boards that have VIA VT82686B southbridge chips. The SBLive isn't the nicest card with regards to the PCI bus so VIA enabled some workarounds in their chipset. Unfortunately this workaround causes data corruption with the ATA100 controller. It's best demonstrated by trying to copy a large amount of files (>100MB) between two drives. The latest VIA 4in1 drivers should fix this, but no guarantees of course.
Also, while we're on the subject, what soundcard /would/ pass through 24-bit without dicking with the stream somehow?
Anything with the ICEnsemble ICE1712 ENVY24 chip does excellent. This includes the Terratec EWX 24/96 and M-Audio Audiophile 2496 that George Pantazopoulos mentioned earlier. M-Audio makes several other boards that have the ICE1712, such as the Delta DiO 2496, Delta 66, etc. Hoontech/STAudio also has a board with this chip called the Soundtrack Audio DSP24 Value.
