(2) the DSP plug-in can be used with other input sources, not just MPEG audio
Just for the above reason alone, I think we should go for the 2nd method;-) Imagine, CD audio playback at 24bit!
Considering it's produced at 16-bit...

Yeah, the second approach that Rob proposed:

can only be used with plug-ins that output 32 bits. I don't think any current CD reader plug-ins output 24 or 32 bits, so someone would have to write one first.
